If you’re new to this, you’re probably very confused. For starters, what does that term even mean?
By definition, a raw food is a food that has not been heated above 118 degrees fahrenheit. Some raw foodists dehydrate, but never, ever use a stove. Raw veganism refers to a diet in which only plant matter is consumed. This is the most popular form of raw foodism, though there are groups that consider themselves raw vegetarians (they eat raw dairy products, such as milk and eggs) or raw animal dieters (they eat raw or fermented meats in addition to raw dairy products). From here, raw veganism is generally split into two categories: high raw and low-fat. High raw, or gourmet raw, usually consists of reproductions of popular dishes, like hamburgers, tacos, cakes, etc. Lots of nuts and seeds are involved (to make the almost unanimous breads and crusts and cheeses and such), as well as oils, spices, hot peppers, and, sometimes, wine.
Look me in the eye and tell me that lasagna doesn’t look better than the real thing.
Low-fat raw veganism consists of fruits and greens, with the occasional overt fat, like coconut, avocado, or raw nuts. There are no oils, no spices, no hot peppers, and no alcohol. Now, this doesn’t mean that we won’t have the occasional mamey sapote pumpkin pie or green papaya salad or gourmet raw meal, but the vast majority of our calories come from ripe fruit. Greens are very important as well; I myself will usually have a large salad topped with tomatoes and bell peppers for lunch. Monoeating is an important part of the low-fat raw diet. A likely day might consist of a thousand calories of banana for breakfast, five hundred to seven hundred fifty calories of oranges for lunch, a thousand calories of dates for dinner, and a salad for an evening snack. The general belief is that combining foods (and certain combinations in particular) complicate the digestive process.
Bring on the monomeals, baby!
