Tomatoes.
I am addicted to tomatoes. Like, seriously. I not only like them, I crave them every day. I have to include them in everything that makes sense (salads, soups, chopped on top of noodles, guac, etc.) and things that don’t (orange juice, most recently). If good ones weren’t so damn expensive, I’d mono-eat them every day. I wish to consume you, my savory friend. The cool part?...

Emotions.
It’s been said that, on a raw food diet, your emotions are more overwhelming, more present, than on any other kind of diet. I can tell you from experience that this is completely, totally, and entirely true. It’s a combination of factors. If you’re hungry and/or stressed, and somebody flips you off on the highway, or you come home to a mountain of dirty dishes, you just might...

Story of my life.
What you said: I'm a Vegan.
What they think you said: Hi, I eat nothing. So, please help me by sharing your opinion on why I need to eat animal products before I develop a nutritional deficiency.

A very, very, berry good dessert.
This calls for surinam cherries and mulberries, which we have on the property, but I realize that not everyone has access to them. So, although the surinam cherries really make the dish, you can substitute any blend of berries or acidic fruits. Be creative! Let me know how your different concoctions turn out! Serves about three saucy people Coconut Crepe: 3-4 coconuts’ worth of young...

A raw Pad Thai that'll knock your socks off!
I hate almond butter. I don’t like nuts in general, as they tend to close my throat up and feel too heavy to me. That being said, this is fricking delicious. It’s sweet, yet savory. Exotic. And so good I literally licked the plate when I was done. Serves two - three 3/4 cup of almond butter 1/2 cup of coconut water 1/2 lemon, juiced 1t-1T ginger 1 clove of garlic OR 5-6 garlic...

Lemongrassy deliciousness in a soup.
So, I’m back in Hawaii. There’s not a lot in season at the moment, but we have craploads of lemongrass, so this awesome soup came into being. It tastes so complex and…well, not raw. And it has no fat. Bring it on, I say! Serves two as a starter 4 cups of coconut water 1-2T lemongrass shoots 1/4 cup of your favorite seaweed 4-5 Keffir lime leaves (or a bit of lime juice) ...

Unbelievably easy applesauce.
This recipe was borne out of part of an apple pie recipe I made recently. It is so good and so like conventional applesauce it’s crazy. And it’s just two (or three) ingredients! Makes a sizable portion for one 4 apples, chopped into large-ish pieces 10-15 dates Cinnamon to taste (optional) Blend until applesauce-y consistency. Seriously, it’s that easy.

The truth about tahini.
For those of you who are unaware, tahini is a sesame seed paste most commonly used in its roasted form to make hummus. In its raw form, it’s milder, and is used for everything from salad dressings to raw mayonnaise and back. It’s generally praised for its high nutritional content and, well, deliciousness. But what’s really going on here? First, the good stuff. Tahini has high...

Why mono-meals?
Mono-meals are an important aspect of a low-fat raw vegan’s diet. That’s not to say that we’ll make something fancier sometimes, but the majority of the time, we try to eat one thing at a time. So why would we do this? I mean, it seems so boring, right? Maybe so, if you’re used to eating more complex meals, but once you’ve gotten into mono-meals, you start to realize...

B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
For us low-fat raw vegans, bananas are a staple food, much like pasta or bread in a standard diet. I personally eat, on average, two 7-8 cup smoothies a day when I’m in Pittsburgh, or three-four hands when I’m in Hawaii. One of my cats is named Musa. So what’s the dealio? Why is a tropical fruit the most popular food in America? What’s so special about you? Well, to...

Holidays, the raw vegan way.
Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts are not typically what you would call raw-friendly. Or even healthy. So you have to find your own way to do things. This was my Thanksgiving turkey. His name was Steve. He was made out of a honeydew, bosc pear, two raisins, a triangle of orange pepper, a waddle-shaped piece of red pepper, grapes, clementines, and bamboo skewers. He was delicious. This was my...

Super simple raw vegan spaghetti.
Makes a light lunch for one 2 small-medium tomatoes 1/2 mango small handful of raisins (optional) 1 zucchini Blend the first three ingredients. Make the zucchini into noodles, using a spiralizer or potato peeler. A peeler will make fettuccine-like noodles, whereas a spiralizer will make spaghetti. The raisins are optional. They make the sauce thicker and sweeter, which may or may not be a...

When cooked cravings get the best of you.
You’re not alone. Everyone has them. Except me. (Um…yeah no.) That’s what we get for giving ourselves all those delicious salts and spices and refined sugars. It’s going to happen. There’s no avoiding it. Even if you’re doing very well, living with no temptations in your house, and have been for a while, you’re going to come across a smell or picture that...

The natural hygiene side of things.
Many of us LFRVs believe in natural hygiene. Basically, that’s a fancy term for letting your body heal itself. No medications necessary. Pretty crazy, right? Now, this isn’t naturopathy. That’s the metaphor of the medical world; medications are still used, but they’re herb-based and don’t have long, unpronounceable names (in most cases). In my opinion, this is a...

The best guacamole ever!
Seriously. This is delicious. Just make sure you get good tomatoes and fresh corn; that’ll make it or break it. Serves 1 - makes about four tacos 1 small avocado 1 medium tomato chunk of bell pepper (maybe about 3” by 4”) 2 green onions 1 ear’s worth of corn kernels half of a lime, juiced 1.5t cumin (optional) dash of black pepper (optional) Mash the avocado. Mix...

Low-fat raw vegan chili.
While this may not be an exact replication of the Spanish favorite, it’s still delicious! Serves 1 semi-hungry person 3 ears worth of corn kernels 1 medium carrot 1/4 bell pepper 1/4 small eggplant 4-5 small-medium tomatoes handful of raisins (probably about a 1/4 cup) cumin, to taste (optional) Dice the carrot, pepper, and eggplant. Mix with corn kernels. Blend the tomatoes,...

The delicious and nutritious Punica Granatum.
Now that winter’s rolling around for most of us, we can indulge in the lovely, lovely pomegranate. They’re not the cheapest fruit in the world, but they are one of the most nutritious. Um, so worth $2 a pop. They have more calories than you would think - 68 per 100 grams. For reference, a banana has 92, a lemon has 29, and an apple has 59. Of those 68 calories, 91% are from...

Part Three: Why?
What’s the appeal in dropping every conventional way of eating for fruit? Why would you choose bananas over bread? Because, my friends, they love you. On a low-fat raw vegan diet, you’ll have more energy, your mind will be clearer, your skin will be softer, you’ll lose weight, your digestive system will regulate, and you’ll feel better about yourself. All because your food...

Part Two: It's not just a diet, it's a lifestyle.
Think about every diet you’ve ever been on. Now think about what changes it required you to make to your day-to-day life, other than the number of calories you eat. Coming up empty? You’re not alone. Nearly every diet is solely focused on food, with maybe a little exercise thrown in. Not this one. Prepare to revamp how you view life. Reader, meet your new best friend. Exposing...

Part One: An introduction to low-fat raw veganism.
If you’re new to this, you’re probably very confused. For starters, what does that term even mean? By definition, a raw food is a food that has not been heated above 118 degrees fahrenheit. Some raw foodists dehydrate, but never, ever use a stove. Raw veganism refers to a diet in which only plant matter is consumed. This is the most popular form of raw foodism, though there are groups...

A little bit about me
Hello, everyone! Lovely to meet you. I’m Sydney, daughter of the founder of the only 80-10-10 community on the planet. I’m a fifteen-year-old low-fat raw vegan with a passion for healthy living. If you’re new to all this hippie, new-agey “raw food” stuff, let me give you a quick summary: most raw foodists are into dehydrating and sprouting and trying to remake...
